King George V Silver War Medal (1914-1918)
Obverse: Bare head of King George V with the legend "GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN: REX ET IND: IMP."
Reverse: Horseman marching to the right, 1914-1918. Awarded to No. 32. Weight: 9g, Diameter: 36.07mm.
Victory Medal and British War Medal Overview
These medals were awarded to millions of military personnel after the First World War (1914-19). The ones listed were awarded to 410397 PTE H. Sannady, 38th Canadian Infantry.
Victory Medal
Awarded to all New Zealand troops serving overseas, except for those arriving in Samoa after 30 August 1914 and those serving only in Great Britain. Around 6 million medals were issued across the British Empire. The medal features a ‘double rainbow’ ribbon.
Obverse: Victory holding a palm branch.
Reverse: A laurel wreath with the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919."
British War Medal
Instituted in 1919 to mark the end of World War I.
Obverse: Uncrowned left-facing profile of King George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal.
Reverse: St George on horseback trampling the eagle shield and skull and crossbones. About 6.5 million silver medals and 110,000 bronze medals were awarded to labor battalions, including Chinese, Indian, and Maltese personnel.
